How to use this calculator well

  1. Pick the metro tier that matches the city — within tier, actual rent varies by neighborhood.
  2. Choose the bedroom count. If you're rooming with 2 others, look at a 3-bedroom and split three ways.
  3. Use this only to bracket your expectations. Real listings on Zillow or Apartments.com will tell you the actual figure.
  4. Top-25 metros can vary 3x by neighborhood. Pittsburgh (in 'top') ≠ Manhattan.

Dorms are typically subsidized — campus housing often runs below market rent for studios.
