How to use this calculator well

  1. Use the deductible from your insurance card summary of benefits.
  2. Most adult students see a doctor 2-3 times a year (excluding preventive).
  3. ER is rare but expensive. Most ER visits for healthy young adults are sprains, broken bones, severe infections.
  4. Dental cleaning is annual — most plans don't cover dental so it stays cash-pay.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get low-cost care without insurance?

Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) charge on a sliding scale by income. Planned Parenthood has low-cost reproductive care. Direct-care / DPC providers have monthly memberships ($50-100/mo).

What about urgent care vs ER?

Urgent care handles non-emergencies: sprains, minor cuts, strep throat, UTIs. ER is for true emergencies. Urgent care costs $150-300 cash; ER visits start at $1,000+ for the facility fee alone.

Does my plan cover ER if I go out-of-network?

Yes — federal law (the No Surprises Act) requires ER visits to be covered as in-network, even if the hospital isn't in your plan.
