How to use this calculator well

  1. Pick the data tier you realistically need. Don't pick 'unlimited' for a campus with Wi-Fi and light phone use.
  2. Tick tethering if you regularly use your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot for laptop work.
  3. BYOD = Bring Your Own Device. If you need an installment plan, only postpaid carriers will approve — but they require SSN/credit.
  4. International calls add $5-15/month depending on plan; pick what matches your volume.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a postpaid plan without SSN?

Most carriers will require a credit check and either SSN or large deposit. The MVNOs (Mint, Visible, US Mobile, Cricket) are designed for customers without credit history.

What's 'deprioritization'?

On MVNOs, your data may slow down in congested areas because you're behind the parent network's postpaid customers. Usually fine on less-congested campuses.

Is Google Fi worth it?

Excellent if you travel internationally — but the base price is higher than MVNOs. Worth it only if Wi-Fi calling to multiple countries matters.
