On-campus isn't automatically cheaper — the math depends on whether you need a meal plan and how far you'll commute.

How to use this calculator well

  1. Pull the dorm + required meal plan cost from your school's housing portal. Most freshmen face this as a package.
  2. Off-campus apartment: include ALL of: rent, electricity, water/sewer/trash, internet, renter's insurance if required.
  3. Set the lease and academic months carefully — if you stay in the apartment over summer, you're paying rent that on-campus wouldn't.
  4. Furniture line is real cash drain in month 1. Sublet or use student marketplace for used stuff if budget is tight.

Frequently asked questions

Can I waive the meal plan?

Sometimes — most schools require first-year students to buy the full plan. After year 1, off-campus students can usually decline.

What about hidden costs of off-campus?

Application fees ($20-50), credit checks, security deposit (1-2 months' rent), broker fee in NYC, parking, and renters' insurance ($15-25/mo).

Is on-campus housing tax-deductible?

No — both are personal living expenses.
