How to use this calculator well

  1. Pick the cooking style that matches your real diet, not a 'healthy American' ideal.
  2. Set meals cooked per week honestly — most students cook 8-15 meals/week at home.
  3. Adjust 'restaurants' to your actual takeout / dining out spend over the last month.
  4. The 'specialty / import premium' line is hidden in the math: it accounts for the extra cost of finding familiar spices, halal meat, or plant-based protein sources.

Frequently asked questions

Where do international students shop?

H Mart, 99 Ranch, Patel Brothers, Cermak, or local ethnic markets typically beat mainstream grocery stores on staples. Trader Joe's frozen food is popular for quick meals. Aldi is generally cheapest for produce and dairy.

Am I eligible for food stamps (SNAP)?

Most F-1 students are not, with narrow exceptions (some work-study + family hardship cases). Don't budget assuming you'll qualify.

How much does eating out cost?

Casual restaurants: $10-15 per meal + tip. Coffee: $3-6 per drink. Meal-plan replacement: $400-600/month if no cooking.
