How to use this calculator well

  1. Count each course type you plan to enroll in this semester.
  2. STEM with lab runs heavier than non-lab STEM — research credit hours are even heavier.
  3. On-campus work on F-1 tops out at 20 hours per week during the semester (full time allowed only on breaks and certain OPT periods).
  4. If total weekly load exceeds 60 hours, this tool flags it.

Frequently asked questions

Why are STEM-with-lab heavier?

Lab reports, pre-labs, post-lab analysis, and group project time stack on top of lecture study. NSSE and CIRP surveys consistently show STEM with lab at 3-4 hours of outside study per credit hour.

Is asynchronous really lighter?

On average, yes — but with no scheduled structure, students often procrastinate. Plan 2x the discipline.

Can I count class time in the totals?

No — this tool shows hours OUTSIDE class. Add ~3 hours of class per credit to get total time commitment.
